Sydani was engaged by the US-CDC to execute the Strengthening COVID-19 Implementation Program (SCOVIP) in collaboration with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA). The primary objectives of this program were to bolster the nation’s COVID-19 vaccination Bedrive, align with the national SCALES strategy, and augment vaccination uptake by 25% in the first phase across four focal states: Benue, Ekiti, Niger, and Osun, over a span of five months from May to September 2022.
Leveraging a multifaceted approach that included advocacy and mass campaigns to drive vaccine uptake, the interventions proved highly successful. They contributed 70.3%, 33.6%, 43.8%, and 23.8% to the national target for the respective states. The impact of the intervention extended beyond vaccination metrics, fostering increased PHC system strengthening, enhanced functionality and integration of vaccination activities, and heightened ACSM (Advocacy, Communication, and Social Mobilization) activities.
The achievements of SCOVIP were so notable that an expansion was initiated, continuing the intervention in Niger and Benue states from March to June 2023. The expanded phase aimed to elevate vaccination coverage in both states to 70% of the eligible population.
The overarching goal of SCOVIP was to ensure that at least 20% of both states’ populations were vaccinated within a concise two-month timeframe. This ambitious target was pursued through the implementation of innovative demand-generation activities, adaptable service delivery strategies, and collaborative efforts with other project-implementing partners. The project successfully surpassed expectations, contributing over 20% vaccination coverage in both Niger and Benue States. Notably, Niger State achieved over 80%, while Benue State achieved more than 50% vaccination coverage during the project’s implementation.
