Context
Despite concerted efforts by the NCCE and the central role of pre-service teacher education (PSTE) in promoting quality education especially at the Basic levels, pre-service teacher education has largely been left out of the significant investments made to improve basic education in Nigeria over the past two decades.
What We Did
To address these gaps, Sydani designed a 4 in one model approach in partnership with CEBAR and the National Commission for Colleges of Education and funded by the International Development Research Centre to evaluate the adaptation, effectiveness, and scalability of the 4-in-1 model in enhancing educational outcomes in the Nigerian educational system. The 4-in-one teaching model combines Microteaching, Jigsaw, Problem-based learning (PBL), and Technological Pedagogical Selection and Content Knowledge (TPSACK). These approaches were adapted to strengthen pre-service teachers’ pedagogical, technological, and content knowledge across six selected Colleges of Education (COEs) in Nigeria. Over a 22 month implementation cycle, the project implementation involved rigorous training, assessment, and capacity-building activities aimed at equipping teachers to deliver inclusive and efficient education.
The Results
The project proposes to improve the skills and knowledge of pre-service teachers in pedagogy, technology integration, and curriculum delivery. By utilizing evidence-based teaching models, it enhanced teaching quality, fostered inclusive education practices, and contributed to better learning outcomes among students. Additionally, the research findings provided a foundation for scaling up the approach across other educational institutions and influencing policy reforms in teacher education in Nigeria.
