Context

Smallholder farmers in Benue State face significant challenges in accessing effective agricultural extension services, with digital solutions offering a potential remedy. However, the low adoption rates of these digital tools indicate the need for a strategic approach to improve their accessibility and effectiveness.

Action

Action: Based on the research findings, a strategy was designed to address the barriers identified in the adoption of digital agricultural solutions. The strategy includes initiatives to improve digital literacy among farmers, particularly focusing on the use of mobile-based platforms. Efforts are also being made to enhance network infrastructure in rural areas to ensure that digital tools are accessible even in the most remote locations. Additionally, the strategy aims to promote the use of alternative digital platforms, such as social media, that farmers have already started using effectively to market their produce.

The Results

The implementation of these strategic initiatives has the potential to significantly increase the adoption and effectiveness of digital extension services among smallholder farmers in Benue State. By addressing key challenges such as device accessibility, network coverage, and digital literacy, the strategy aims to create a more enabling environment for the use of digital tools in agriculture. This is expected to lead to improved market access, higher productivity, and better incomes for farmers, contributing to the overall goal of sustainable agricultural development in the region.
