Results for Development (R4D) provides technical assistance to the health financing landscape at both National and subnational levels. Since 2018, R4D and its Nigerian partner Sydani Initiative for International Development (Sydani) have provided technical assistance to the budget process reforms being implemented by Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH), in developing strategic annual budgets that are linked to health sector priorities and demonstrate value for money. R4D/Sydani also provides technical assistance to two key agencies of the FMoH – the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) and the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) – with implementation of the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) and in 2020, supported the Kaduna state government to assess the impact of COVID-19 on health financing in the state, looking at how the pandemic has affected funding for health priorities like primary health care and health insurance.

Through the R4D/Sydani support, the FMoH, NPHCDA and NHIS have demonstrated improved performance and capacity in implementing impactful, context-specific solutions to the complexities of the Nigerian health financing landscape. As part of lessons learnt in implementing its support so far, the R4D/Sydani team understands that to realise the bold vision of achieving UHC using health financing as a vehicle, the Nigerian health financing landscape will benefit tremendously from collaboration at different levels within the system, thought-partnership and shared goals, and co-creation of improved context-specific and sustainable solutions by all partners.

To catalyse this partnership building, the R4D/Sydani team will be hosting a series of webinars over the coming weeks to discuss lessons learnt and evidence generated in its work across the Nigerian health financing landscape.
